When it looks like winter wonderland outside and it’s freezing below zero, the last you’ll be thinking is that you have to eat smart in order to stay healthy and fit. Instead you’ll be drinking that steaming hot cup of cocoa even if your calorie police is sounding the siren telling you not to do it. Who cares if the calorie police handcuffs you, you’ll take that sinful cup any time — every wicked drop of that creamy cocoa is worth being incarcerated in fat prison. Or is it?
Eat Your Spinach
Make sure you eat your vegetables and fruits during winter. Take two palm sizes of vegetables every meal and at least two servings of fresh fruit throughout the day. Don’t neglect to take your whole grains and your servings of lean protein. You can sip that sinful cup of cocoa or guzzle down that nasty slice of ham as long as you always eat your veggies and your fruits. Limit high-fat foods like pizza or cupcakes to a minimum – you can get your good fats from nuts and oily fish rich in omega3.
Load up on Vitamins
Get into the practice of taking your multi-vitamins and anti-oxidants and other supplements religiously. The healthy food for eating smart will help you and the vitamins will keep you stronger.
Sleep Well
Food and vitamins are not your lone allies in this health quest — make sure you get plenty of sleep as well. Go to bed at a regular time. Follow a bedtime ritual, like taking a warm bath or drinking a glass of milk.
Maintain Hygiene
The winter season is also virus season. Make sure you wash your hands before eating. Use hot soapy water and scrub your hands for at least one minute.
Drink Water
Keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water throughout the day. This will help you keep hunger pangs at bay. Your body needs sufficient hydration to keep healthy. Drinking water will help your skin from becoming too dry because of the colder temperature. Green tea and other warm beverages will also help you but always keep a bottle of water nearby to remind you to take your daily eight glasses.
Exercise, exercise
Step on that treadmill and start pumping those muscles. Don’t let the lazy atmosphere stall you from doing your exercise. Maintain consistent exercise at least two to three times a week. Your body will burn extra calories while keeping you warm. Exercise and you will shy away those unwanted fats from creeping up.
Get your daily dose of Vitamin D
Part of eating smart is to get outside each morning for some sunlight. Remember the sun is scarce during winter. And Vitamin D from the sun is needed to get you in most favorable disposition through out the day. But remember to get into the habit of putting on sunscreen when you get exposed to the sun for a long period of time. The winter sun can be just as damaging as the summer sun.
